AI for agriculture, horticulture, water and food
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly used in society to detect patterns in large diverse datasets and assist in solving problems of complex systems. The aim of the present programme is to apply and extend AI methods for the solutions of urgent societal challenges in the agriculture, horticulture, water and food (AHWF) sector.
The aim of this programme is to address knowledge questions for the development and use of AI systems in the context of agriculture, horticulture, water and food. AI technology brings an opportunity to further optimize workflows and decision making. There is an urgent need to broaden this optimisation from production-oriented workflow to include societal challenges of long-term sustainability.
Both the Water and the Agri-Horti-Food sectors are dependent on a strong tradition of numerical modelling to analyse systems and optimise management. Recent developments in modelling emphasise the intertwining of process-based modelling with data-driven analyses based on operationally available data, as well as the speeding up of operational forecasts using AI-based metamodels. The vast possibilities of AI technology for these applications is far from being completely explored. The purpose of this programme is to explore these possibilities of AI technology.
